Five Reasons to Buy Satellite Radio This Christmas

A Good Time to Give it to Yourself or Someone Else

By Corey Deitz, About.com

If you're considering the big leap in Satellite Radio, it's less of a leap this year for various reasons.

1. Hardware Prices Are Down

Prices are satellite receivers and accessories have taken a nice swing downwards. Many good starter units are in the $30 to $50 dollars range.

Compare Prices For Yourself

As an example of just how prices have moderated, a couple of years ago, I purchased an XM MyFi portable receiver for over $300 dollars. Now you can find them as low as $135.00

2. Commercial-Free Music Rules

Both XM and SIRIUS offer dozens of channels with commercial-free music. That alone is worth the price.

3. Subscription Rates Still Affordable

Monthly subscription rates have been held down to a reasonable price. Both services are still charging $12.95-a-month if you pay monthly. If you pay for a year or more, you can save some considerable change over the course of your purchase.

(By the way: SIRIUS is offering a lifetime plan: pay $499.99 and never pay another dime. Offer ends January 31, 2007)

4. Dynamic Programming

Both satellite services continue to update and tweak programming. Satellite radio is anything but a stagnant offering. Channels are periodically changed out and/or revamped to better serve subscribers.

Both services continue to offer special programming you won’t hear anywhere else, exclusive concerts by artists spanning all genres, guest hosts and luminaries from racing to rock, plus plenty of sports and talk programming.

5. Satellite Radio Might Save Your Life

Especially if you’re one of those people who is constantly punching the radio buttons because you think your local stations plays too many commercials or can’t seem to find a local radio station to meet your expectations.

Satisfying choices will keep your eyes on the road and your fingers on the steering wheel instead of on your car radio.
