How to Create Your Own Radio Program

Part 6 of 6: Promoting Yourself

By Corey Deitz, About.com

Once you have created your radio show and are offering it to the world on a regular basis, you’ll probably to have as many listeners as possible.

You can have the greatest product in the world but if nobody knows it's out there and where to buy it, you won’t make many sales.

It’s the same with your radio show. When you feel it’s ready for Prime Time, don’t expect people to find you; go out there, be a little aggressive and don’t be shy about recruiting your audience.

Press Releases

One of the best ways to get the word out about your show is through a standard press release. Everyone has a story – including you and your radio show. Think about what makes your show unique, interesting, or timely.

Keep your eye on the news and look for topical which might give yo9u a reason to put out a press release. For instance, if you do a show about wine and there’s a terrible wild fire in California wine country, that’s a good time to find a way to tie in with the news item while getting some publicity. Public Relation firms, book publishers, and independent promoters use this tactic all the time.

If you don’t know how to write a press release, see an earlier article I wrote entitled “Get Free Publicity on the Radio For Your Product, Business or Organization”.

Start by distributing your press release through the many free press release services available on the Internet. By using these services, your release will get into search engines. I’ve compiled a pretty good list here.

Also, don’t overlook your local newspaper when it comes to sending a press release. Local papers like local stories – just make sure you revise your general release to include some specifics that make it local like you, where you graduated high school from, etc.
